This month’s story

A familiar door—and a new home for “Ivan”

A relationship built ten years ago became a lifeline when every other road seemed closed.

Ivan, whose name has been changed for privacy, celebrates a new chapter with members of the Metro Relief community

“Ivan” is a name used to protect our friend’s privacy.

Dear Metro Relief Family,

This summer, because of you, “Ivan” moved into a stable home.

When Ivan came to Metro Relief in April, he had no identification, no income, little hope, and no community around him. But he remembered something from ten years earlier: our team had met him with dignity and respect. When every other road felt closed, he returned because he believed Metro Relief would welcome him and try.

Ivan was born while his mother was incarcerated. After she died, he moved among extended family across Texas. Living with disabilities and mental-health challenges, he struggled to find a place to call home and the caring community he needed.

Our Mobile Case Managers helped Ivan access hospital-based mental-health care, replace his identification, begin the disability-benefits process, and adjust his medication through a second treatment stay. In June, through a shared-housing program, Ivan moved into his new apartment. Today, he receives counseling through MHMR and rides his bike to the community center.

Friends are always welcome back to Metro Relief if they need us. Ivan’s journey reminds us that steady, respectful relationships can become a lifeline—even years later.

Thank you for helping us help Ivan find a stable home. He also wrote a poem for Metro Relief, offering an honest glimpse into his journey.
