A Poem from a Friend

A poem shared with Metro Relief by a friend whose journey reminds us what steady relationships and renewed hope can make possible.

Success is a word to digest.
Sometimes what’s around you
is hard to decompress.
Killing all my deities
at my worst plus my best.
Like the demon on my shoulder,
my formula pest.

Anxiety gets the best of me,
and it’s soaking up my energy.
Cigs to my lungs is healing me,
but also killing me.
Telling myself it’s the end of me.

The moon changes my mood,
so don’t get misconstrued.
There’s a little love in my heart,
and that’s my number one tool.

You can win to win
if you willing to get bruised.
If you lose to lose,
just don’t get fooled.

I write a lot
because it feels like I’m answering myself.
Like Jonny Death.

As I lay my mind, body, and soul to rest,
please God, lay my sin to death.
And God, thanks for Metro Relief.
Amen.
